Marinecall SMS service closure
iTouch, operator of the Marinecall telephone, fax and SMS (Short Message Service) weather service, has notified Reeds that they have withdrawn the Marinecall SMS service. The 160 character limit of mobile telephone SMS messaging makes it difficult to provide sufficiently detailed forecasts, and the service has decreased significantly in usage over time.
 
The closure only affects the Marinecall SMS service (see RNA 2009 pages 95 and 96); the Marinecall telephone and fax services (see RNA 2009 pages 94 and 95), continue unchanged.
 
Many mobile telephones now have the capability to access, over GPRS and EDGE/G3, highly detailed weather forecast websites, where the only costs to the user are network charges. NAVTEX continues to provide free of charge and free to receive weather forecasts to those with suitable reception equipment.
 
Existing customers of the Marinecall SMS service will have received a free SMS message advising them of the closure and will not have been charged for any messages sent after 30th November 2008 (as payment was only taken when the forecast was delivered successfully).  In the unlikely event that a customer has been charged, iTouch will refund the 25p to the customer. Refunds can be claimed via iTouch Customer Services on 0871 200 3985 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm). Proof of purchase may be required by way of mobile telephone bill.
